On October 24, 1970, a gathering of eight African American ladies entered the library of Fontbonne University with a shared objective. Yolande Nicholson, Antoinette Smith, Rita Hunt, Jeannette Gauda, Collette Lemelle and three others anchored the entryways of the library close and started to get their work done as they involved the space. Their objective was to see the focuses in their beforehand composed proclamation come to reality. These young ladies intended to make known the privileges of African Americans and to achieve positive change at Fontbonne. In their pronouncement they requested that the accompanying changes be made at Fontbonne: to have an African American overseer, an African American officer in both Financial Aid and Admissions, an African American advisor, an introduction program more outfitted towards African Americans, African American social training encounters, a particular range in the library for African American understudies and a foundation of an African American craftsman arrangement reserve. Alongside these requests, their statement requested pay increments and a change of working conditions for African American specialists at Fontbonne.
